Ramon Rice was my brother. He was a well known Santa Fe, New Mexico
artist, where he died in 1986. Born in Salem Oregon in 1928 and grew up
during the great depression. The family lived in the country near the small
town of Scapoose, in a rustic house his father built.
Early on he loved to create things with his hands, he apprenticed to a Violin Maker and by age eleven created a full sized violin. He started teaching himself to paint at age 15. At the start of World War II, the family moved to Portland, OR where he completed High School. After the war he was inducted into the army and spent his term of service in Italy, where he became fluent in Italian. After his stint in the army he enrolled in college and studied for the ministry. He earned two master's degrees in philosophy and was studying for his doctorate when he decided this was not the career that would make him complete. He was a self taught artist, a genius and a very gregarious person who loved to entertain at social gatherings by singing with his rich baritone voice operatic arias.
